Balusters, Spindles, and Handrails
Spindle painting is the most time-intensive part of any staircase job. Each spindle has four faces and two ends, all needing consistent coverage without runs or drips. We paint every spindle individually by hand.

Balusters and Spindles
Hand painting each one takes longer but produces a clean, consistent finish that holds up to daily contact. Turned spindles with profile detail need paint applied carefully into every contour.
Handrail and Newel Post
The handrail is the most handled surface on any staircase. It needs to be prepared back to sound timber, primed correctly, and finished in a hard-wearing oil-based or water-based gloss or satin. The newel post is the most prominent element from the hallway. We treat it with the same care as the handrail.
Stair Risers and Treads
Painted staircases require preparation work on risers and treads before any finish coat goes on. We advise on the most durable finish for treads during the site visit. See our hallway painting page for the full room context alongside your staircase refresh.
Victorian and Edwardian Staircases
Victorian and Edwardian staircases in Cheshire frequently have original turned timber spindles, carved newel posts, and decorative brackets. These features have often been repainted many times, with multiple paint layers obscuring the original profile.

Paint Build-Up on Period Joinery
Where paint has built up significantly on period joinery, we advise on stripping options at the quotation stage. A chemical strip back to bare timber before repriming and repainting produces a far better result than additional coats over an already thick surface. The original profile and character of the joinery is revealed.
Understairs Area
The area under the stairs is often overlooked in a hallway repaint. In Victorian properties with open balustrades, the understairs ceiling is visible from the main hallway. We include the understairs ceiling in a staircase painting job as standard. Internal cupboard painting is quoted separately.
Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment and Preparation Advice
We examine the staircase in detail. We count the spindles, assess the condition, and check the paint build-up on all surfaces. Any stripping work required before painting is noted.
2. Surface Preparation
All surfaces are sanded back to provide a key for new paint. Glossy paint is keyed thoroughly. Stripped timber is primed. Cracks between treads and risers are filled.
3. Primer Coat
An oil-based or specialist wood primer is applied to bare or stripped timber. A bonding primer is applied to previously painted surfaces that have been sanded back.
4. Spindle Painting
Each spindle is painted individually by hand. This is the most time-intensive part of the job. We work methodically down the balustrade, painting each spindle fully before moving to the next.
5. Handrail, Newel Post, and Final Inspection
Handrail and newel post are painted last. We inspect every spindle, handrail, newel post, risers, and treads in good light. Touch-ups are done before we leave.
