Render Painting Services
Each render type — cement, K-Rend, lime, or polymer — has specific requirements. We identify the correct coating from the first inspection.
Smooth and Fine-Textured Render
Smooth cement render is the most common exterior finish on inter-war and post-war housing throughout Cheshire. Once staining, fading, or hairline cracking appears, the only reliable fix is a professional clean, prepare, and repaint — applying another coat on top of a compromised surface will not hold.
We clean and treat the surface, fill cracks, and apply breathable masonry paint in two coats. Colour changes are common — homeowners refreshing a Macclesfield semi or a Winsford detached before sale regularly switch from tired cream to a contemporary warm grey. For the heavily textured pebbledash finish common on Cheshire’s inter-war semis, see our pebbledash painting service.
Hairline Cracks and Surface Repairs
Hairline cracking in render is normal — thermal movement, the natural settling of older cement mixes, and age all cause it. Fine cracks must be filled before painting. Paint does not bridge cracks; any crack wider than a hair will reappear through a new coat within months if not filled.
We fill hairline cracks with flexible exterior filler, allowing it to cure fully before priming. Where cracking is more widespread or render has lifted from the underlying brick, we assess the extent of repairs and advise on scope and cost before quoting.
K-Rend and Polymer Render Systems
K-Rend and similar polymer render systems are thin-coat finishes on newer and extended properties. They are common on 1990s–2010s extensions and renovations in Wilmslow, Knutsford, and Congleton. These systems are typically coloured in the mix and can be painted when fading occurs or when a colour change is wanted.
Compatibility matters here. Not all masonry paints work on polymer render. We use products designed for thin-coat systems to avoid adhesion failure or early flaking.

Lime Render and Biological Growth Treatment

Lime Render on Period Properties
Cheshire has a significant stock of period properties with lime render. This includes rendered farmhouses across the Cheshire plain, Georgian townhouses in Nantwich, and older cottages throughout the rural south of the county. Lime render is naturally breathable — applying a non-breathable paint seals in moisture, causing rapid failure and potential damage to the wall behind.
Cheshire Painters use breathable coatings on all lime render surfaces. The correct products include limewash, mineral silicate paints, and breathable masonry paints designed for historic substrates.
Biological Growth Treatment
Algae, moss, and lichen colonise rendered surfaces quickly on north-facing and shaded elevations. The green staining is not just cosmetic — biological growth holds moisture against the surface and accelerates surface breakdown. Painting over it without treatment produces a finish that re-greens within a season.
Cheshire Painters pressure-wash and treat every rendered surface before any paint is applied. On persistently shaded north-facing elevations in Macclesfield’s denser Victorian streets, or on the wetter western faces of farmhouses across the Cheshire plain, this step is part of every job. For brick, stone, and all other exterior masonry, see our masonry painting service.
Here’s How It Works
1. Assessment
We inspect the render type, surface condition, crack extent, and any biological growth before quoting.
2. Pressure Washing
The full surface is washed to remove dirt, algae, and loose material.
3. Mould Treatment
Applied where biological growth is present and left to work before the next stage.
4. Crack Filling
Hairline cracks and surface damage are filled and primed. Repairs are left to cure fully.
5. Masking
Windows, doors, sills, and rainwater goods are fully masked.
6. Paint Application
Two coats of the correct breathable masonry paint, applied by brush, roller, or spray depending on scale and texture.
7. Final Check
We inspect coverage and edge quality before leaving.

Render Painting Costs in Cheshire
Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01244 727511 for a precise quote.
Typical Price Ranges
3-bed terraced (front elevation only, Crewe or Northwich): £450–£800. 3-bed semi (all elevations, Macclesfield or Winsford): £900–£1,600. 4-bed detached (fully rendered, Wilmslow or Knutsford): £1,400–£2,500. Scaffolding if required: £300–£600 additional.
What Affects the Cost
Surface area — a fully rendered 4-bed detached has considerably more wall area than a front-elevation-only terrace. Crack and repair extent — widespread cracking or lifted render adds preparation time and materials. Access requirements — scaffold needed for full-height work on two-storey or taller properties.
