Rendered and Masonry Walls

Rendered facades are common across Cheshire’s Victorian and Edwardian streets. Before painting, we check for structural cracks, hollow areas, and poorly bonded sections. Loose render is hacked back and replastered. Only then do we apply masonry primer and finish.

Timber-Framed Buildings

Cheshire’s black-and-white buildings and rural half-timbered farmhouses need breathable coatings. We specify breathable exterior paint systems for all timber-framed work. Timber is cleaned, stripped where needed, checked for rot, and primed correctly before any finish coat is applied.

Windows and Woodwork

Timber sash windows, fascias, soffits, and front doors need proper preparation to last. Many sash windows in Cheshire are original Victorian or Edwardian joinery. We strip back to sound timber, patch any rot, prime correctly, and apply durable exterior gloss or satin.

1. Site assessment

We visit and check every surface. We note the material, existing paint condition, render quality, and any biological growth. We identify structural repairs needed before painting starts.

2. Surface preparation

We clean moss, algae, and loose material from all surfaces. Render is repaired where needed. Timber is stripped to sound material. Biological growth is treated and allowed to dwell before rinsing.

3. Priming

Timber-framed surfaces get a breathable primer appropriate to the species and condition. Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Masonry gets a masonry primer. The right primer for each surface makes the difference between a finish that holds and one that fails early.

4. Paint application

Exterior paint needs dry conditions and temperatures above five degrees during application and cure. We monitor forecasts and plan application phases accordingly. Two finish coats are standard. High-exposure surfaces get a third.

5. Inspection and touch-up

Once the final coat has cured, we inspect all surfaces in good light. Touch-ups are completed before we leave. We walk through the finished work with you before closing the job.

We strip back to sound timber, fill any rot with a compatible exterior filler, prime correctly, and apply durable exterior gloss or satin. Painted sashes are tested to ensure they still slide freely before we leave. This process protects the original joinery rather than sealing over deterioration.

How often does exterior painting need to be redone?

A well-prepared exterior with quality coatings should last eight to twelve years on rendered surfaces. Timber-framed buildings with breathable coatings may perform similarly when preparation is thorough. South and west-facing aspects get more weather exposure and may need attention earlier.

Do I need planning permission to change exterior colour in a conservation area?

Repainting in a similar colour typically doesn’t require permission. Changing colour on a listed building, or on a property in one of Cheshire’s conservation areas such as Nantwich or Chester, may need listed building consent. Check with the relevant local authority before committing to a colour change on any period exterior.

Can you repair cracked render before painting?

Yes. We inspect all render before quoting and include repair in the scope where needed. Structural cracks, hollow sections, and poorly bonded areas are all addressed before painting begins. Painting over failing render is not something we do.

Do you paint sash windows?

Yes. We strip back to sound material, repair rot, prime correctly, and apply durable exterior gloss or satin. Painted sashes are checked to slide freely after completion.

What access equipment do you use on large Cheshire properties?

We use tower scaffolding or mobile access towers on tall detached properties and multi-storey period buildings. Access equipment costs are included in the quote. We don’t use ladders alone for full-height exterior work on period properties.

Can you paint a timber-framed Chester property alongside rendered walls?

Yes. Many Chester properties have both timber-framed sections and rendered areas. We specify the correct paint for each surface type and apply them in the right sequence. We don’t use a single product across incompatible surfaces.

Do you do outdoor house painting?
