Interior Walls

Original lime plaster with cracks and surface variation needs filling, stabilising, and a breathable primer. Hard-set modern plaster is the most straightforward, needing only light preparation before painting. We assess the wall surface during the site visit and specify the preparation approach before quoting.

Exterior Walls

Exterior wall painting covers rendered walls on Victorian properties, large detached homes on masonry, and rendered and stone-faced properties throughout Cheshire. New Plaster and Plasterboard Walls

Freshly plastered walls must not be painted with full-strength emulsion as the first coat. The plaster is still alkaline and needs to cure. We apply a correctly diluted sealing coat first, allow it to dry fully, and then apply two full finish coats.

Feature Walls and Textured Walls

A single wall painted differently to the rest of a room gives the space a focal point. Bold heritage shades suit the proportions of Victorian and Georgian rooms. Textured finishes such as limewash add depth that flat colour cannot achieve.

Here’s How It Works

1. Wall Assessment

We examine all wall surfaces to be painted. We identify the plaster type, check for cracks, damp, loose areas, or previous paint failures. The preparation approach is specified at this stage.

2. Repair and Stabilisation

Cracks are filled, loose or hollow plaster is consolidated or replaced, and rough surfaces are sanded back. This is the most important part of the job.

3. Priming

The primer is matched to the wall type. Breathable primer on original lime plaster. Diluted sealing coat on new plaster. Masonry primer on exterior surfaces. The right primer prevents early paint failure.

4. Finish Coats

Two full finish coats are applied on interior walls. Exterior walls receive two coats of appropriate masonry or breathable paint. Each coat is allowed to cure fully before the next is applied.

5. Coverage Check

We check coverage in good light. Touch-ups are completed before we leave. We walk through the finished work with you before closing the job.

6. Final Inspection

Every room is inspected in good light. The finish is even and consistent. All protection is removed and surfaces cleaned before handover.

What is the difference between interior and exterior wall painting?

Interior walls use water-based emulsions suited to low-humidity, indoor conditions. Exterior walls need paints formulated to resist UV exposure, rain, frost, and biological growth. Using interior paint outside is a common mistake that leads to rapid failure.

Can you paint over previously painted walls?

Yes. We check the condition of the existing paint before quoting. Flaking, peeling, or poorly bonded paint is sanded back and stabilised before new coats are applied. A surface in reasonable condition can be overcoated directly after preparation.

How do you deal with damp walls before painting?

We identify the source of dampness before recommending any painting work. Painting over active damp does not solve the problem and the paint will fail quickly. We advise on the source and recommend specialist damp treatment if needed before the room is painted.

What preparation do new plaster walls need?
