Living Room Painting

Spacious living room painted by Cheshire Painters in Wilmslow

Living room painters in Wilmslow covering the surrounding areas.

Living rooms in Cheshire’s period properties are where the character of the house is most visible. A Georgian townhouse in Knutsford has deep cornicing, ceiling roses, and tall sash windows. A Victorian terrace in Hoole has a chimney breast, alcoves, and picture rails. Large detached homes have high ceilings, bay windows, and more linear metres of woodwork than most clients expect.

  • Walls and ceiling: full room painting with even coverage throughout
  • Bay windows and deep reveals: precise cutting-in at complex angles
  • Chimney breast and alcoves: contrast and feature finishes
  • Coving and cornicing: hand-finished at every profile

Living Room Painting Services

A living room is often the most complex room in the house when it comes to painting. Walls and ceiling yes, but also bay windows, chimney breasts, alcoves, cornicing, and period features that demand precision.

Walls and ceiling

A living room that sees daily use needs paint that looks right from every angle and holds up over time. Flat finishes on walls suit period rooms and hide the minor surface variation common in original lime plaster.

Bay windows and deep reveals

Bay windows are a feature of many Victorian and Edwardian living rooms in Cheshire. The interior of a bay window involves multiple surfaces at angles. Cutting in accurately at each angle takes more time than a flat wall.

Chimney breast and alcoves

The chimney breast is the natural focal point in a Victorian or Georgian living room. Painted in a contrasting or deeper shade than the main walls, it gives the room a defined anchor. Alcoves beside the chimney can be fitted with shelving painted to stand out.

Coving and cornicing

Period living rooms in Cheshire often have run plaster coving or decorative cornicing at the ceiling perimeter. These features are hand-finished at every junction. We do not rely on masking tape alone on moulded cornicing.

Living Room Painting Costs in Cheshire

Prices below are estimates only. Every property is different. Call 01244 727511 for a precise quote.

Typical range

Living room painting typically costs between £500 and £1,200, depending on room size, ceiling height, and the extent of period features.

Cost drivers

Room size and ceiling height, bay windows and cornicing, and paint choice all drive the price. Heritage paints such as Farrow and Ball and Little Greene carry a premium. They produce excellent results and are popular across Cheshire’s period homes.

Here’s How It Works

1. Site visit and colour consultation

We assess the living room, note ceiling height and surface conditions, and discuss colour schemes. We advise on the scheme as a whole, as main wall, chimney breast, alcove backs, and woodwork may all be different.

2. Surface preparation

We fill all cracks, stabilise loose plaster, and sand back rough surfaces. Original lime plaster receives a breathable primer. Bay window reveals and chimney breast surfaces are checked individually.

3. Ceiling and cornicing first

The ceiling is painted first, with cornicing and coving hand-cut at the perimeter. Ceiling roses are finished by hand. Drips from ceiling work land on unpainted walls below, which is why this sequence matters.

4. Walls, chimney breast, and alcoves

Main walls are rolled in two full coats. The chimney breast and alcove backs are painted after the main walls, allowing distinct colours to be applied cleanly at the corners.

5. Woodwork

Skirting boards, architraves, picture rails, and window boards are painted last. Bay window internals are finished carefully at every junction. Door frames are cut in against the wall colour on both faces.

6. Final inspection and walkthrough

We inspect all surfaces in good light, including cornicing and bay window details. Touch-ups are completed before we leave. We walk through the room with you before closing the job.
