Front Door Painting

Original timber front doors are found throughout Cheshire’s older stock: six-panel doors on Victorian terraces in Hoole and Macclesfield, heavy oak doors on Georgian townhouses in Knutsford and Nantwich, and painted hardwood on period farmhouses in the rural east of the county. Timber doors expand and contract with the seasons. We strip back to sound timber, repair any splits or damage, apply the correct primer, and finish with durable exterior gloss or satin.

Many homes in Wilmslow, Crewe, and Congleton have uPVC or composite doors fitted in the 1990s and 2000s. These can be refreshed without replacement. We use specialist adhesion primer and a compatible finish coat designed for plastic and composite surfaces. Colour changes from white to anthracite, black, or any RAL colour are straightforward with the right system.

Choosing a front door colour carries more visual weight than almost any other decision for a Cheshire home. A bold colour on a Georgian townhouse in Knutsford or a heritage green on a Prestbury stone property changes the entire street presence of a house. Preparation is the difference between a front door that lasts and one that peels by spring. We remove flaking paint, key slick surfaces, repair cracks and splits, and apply primer specific to the door material. The quality of preparation determines the quality and longevity of the finish coat.

Letter boxes, knockers, handles, and numerals all need protecting during painting. We mask hardware carefully rather than removing it where possible. If hardware is better removed, we replace it securely after painting and check every fitting is tight before leaving. Glass fanlights and sidelights are masked before any paint is applied.
